What are Seamless Steel Pipes and the usage of Seamless Pipe

in Pipe

Seamless Pipe is made by drawing a solid billet of carbon steel or steel alloy over a piercing rod to create a hollow (seamless) shell. The billets are initially cut to the required length specified by the buyer. They are heated to temperatures of 1200°C to 1300°C in the melting furnace, after which the Seamless Pipe is formed with the help of a piercer. The piercer is drawn over the solid billet to create a hollow shell or what is also called a mother blank. The end is crimped in hot conditions then air-cooled.

The Seamless Steel Pipes will then receive surface treatment such as pickling, powdering and lubrication, so it can then be furthered for the next process of tube drawing. Based on demand for a different finish they can be subject to single, double, or triple drawing. Each tube is annealed to temperatures of around 750°C , then strengthened, cleaned and cut into exact sizes. The finished Seamless Pipe will be tested for quality on standard international parameters before being stacked in inventory ready to be sold.

The attractive thing about Seamless Steel Pipes is their unrivalled ability to withstand high pressure. Seamless Pipe can withstand more pressure than other Steel Pipe such as Welded Pipe. This is because Seamless Pipe does not have a welded seam, so the tensile strength is uniform around the entire circumference of the pipe. Steel Pipe has nominal pressure ratings based on the tensile strength of the mixture of metals and wall thickness of the pipe. Seamless Pipe is indeed more expensive than Welded Pipe, but allows for smaller wall thickness tolerance, making it a preferred choice.

Seamless Pipe and tube industry as a while is almost a century old. The demand for Seamless Steel Pipes came about at the dawn of the transportation sector, with the petroleum sector consuming the majority of Seamless Pipe that is manufactured. Seamless Steel Pipes are used to transport fluids including water, natural gas, waste and air. It is indeed mostly used for applications where strength, resistance to corrosion and product life span are key. The high metallurgical strength and corrosion resistance properties make Seamless Steel Pipes ideal for the oil and gas industry, steam boilers, power plants, fertilizing industry and more.

Although Seamless Steel Pipe is the most expensive steel pipe, it is also the most reliable with the fewest failure points. Due to this, pressure calculations are easier to perform because the weld quality is taken out of the equation. Another advantage to using Seamless Steel Pipes is its strength under loading. Empty pipe has a certain weight that must be supported over long spans. When that pipe begins transporting material, the weight of the material must also be taken into account. Seamless Pipes have better strength benefits when paralleled with welded pipe, where pipe failures and leaks can be common at the welded seam.
